Latin American musicians in exile: music, movements and political involvement

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate issues of living in exile from interviews with two Chilean musicians (Eduardo Carrasco, from the Quilapayún group and Jorge Coulón, from Inti-Illimani). Our aim is to confront experiences in different countries in those years. The utopia in their songs give other meanings to the experience of exile, especially when they lived so differently in Europe. To stay or to return would also bring other issues, replied in a different way by the musicians. Based on the methodology of oral history, we have the objective of discussing courses that led these musicians to be involved in these experiences, either in order to give other directions for their work, either in the sense of using music to give a new direction to their political positions and to their militancy.
