Abstract

Firstly, the author defines the term profession from two perspectives: the qualified and paid performance, and the ethical and social commitment in the long term. He identifies some problems in Librarianship area affecting the latter type of personal involvement: fashion trends in terminology changes that carry unthinking approach and uncritical adoption of knowledge from other disciplines, added to the unjustified use of certain informatics resources. It proposes a series of actions to correct this usual diversions: promoting suitable environments to develop the theoretical foundations of the discipline, without neglecting applied research to practical problem solving; defining concepts and expand vocabulary by setting its meaning; seeking a balance between permanence and innovation, and overview and fragmentation.
