Arabic Logic, - Logic and Grammar, Logical Terms, Al-FārābīAbstract
Al-Fārābī was the first philosopher in the Muslim world to be interested in logic, and many of his logical works have survived. In several of them he raises the problem of the relationship between logic and grammar, which was debated in his time between logicians and grammarians. His aim was to adapt Greek logical terminology to the Arabic language and to anchor it in its culture. One such work is entitled Kitāb al-alfāẓ al-musta'mala fī l-manṭiq (Utterances employed in Logic). Here I will outline the contents of the book and note some of the issues raised in it.
