Abstract

This article analyzes walkability in BogotáD.C., Colombia, considering it a key element of 21st century urbanism that improves the quality of life and humanizes the city. It highlights that walkability is essential for the sustainable development of a city, providing benefits in public health, social welfare and local economy. The study also explores the connection between walkability and new planning strategies such as the 15-minute city. To determine the Walkability Index (WGI), a methodology based on Geographic Information Systems and official data was used. The ICAM considers seven dimensions: pedestrian infrastructure, pedestrian mobility, public safety, road safety, attractiveness, environment and urban morphology, with 18 variables selected by literature review and data availability. The results reveal that, of the 164,890 stretches of sidewalk evaluated, only 10% are optimal for walking. Fifty point six percent are considered good, 33.7% acceptable and 5.4% insufficient. It is concluded that, although the study offers an objective evaluation for public policy decision-making, it is essential to complement it with perception analyses and to address limitations such as improper occupation of public space. These analyses are crucial for urban planners to make data-driven decisions.
