Abstract

Currently, cities are prioritizing walkability in urban planning and design, considering the pedestrian as the central axis. A key factor in this process is phytotecture, a discipline that integrates vegetation into urban spaces to enhance the pedestrian experience. Its proper implementation allows the creation of accessible, safe and pleasant environments, promoting sustainability and a healthier lifestyle.

However, despite its benefits, many cities still face challenges in taking full advantage of phytotecture, as it is often used only as an ornamental element. As a case study, the city of Manizales (Colombia) was analyzed, which presents a complex urban environment, where relief, climate and infrastructure pose significant challenges. Using a mixed methodology with 150 pedestrians, observed in 100-meter walks in three recognized commercial areas, factors such as accessibility, shade, thermal comfort and presence of vegetation were evaluated.

The results obtained reveal a deficient implementation of phytotecture due to the lack of planning strategies. It is proposed to integrate its principles and forestry criteria in urban design to make Manizales a healthier, sustainable and walkable city, contributing to the wellbeing of the population.
