Abstract

Ports have influenced the urban structure, the economy, the image and the culture of the city. Docks, buildings, facilities and port spaces in many cities have become obsolete because of the evolution of the maritime transport. Especially from the 80’s some of these old port areas have been opened to the city, being provided with new uses and new activities. Guidelines and intervention principles good for the Latin-American cities with possibilities of restoration or renewal of their port spaces can be obtained from the analysis of the most important experiences of port transformations in the world, in particular those from the same region.
